Asset Forfeiture and Ruining a State Senators Career

This is great, because I get to start out with a novelty.  A WTF moment inside that very same WTF moment.  Today, President Trump (PT) had a number of law enforcement officials into the White House for a visit.

Politico News Report on Visit

As read, it sounds like a great visit until one of the Sheriffs brings up the policy of Asset
Forfeiture.  He goes on to mention how a state senator in Texas is trying to change the law.    According to the existing law in Texas, you can take someones property do to a crime, they do not have to have been convicted of a crime.  Just arrested for it.  The sate senator was asking for a change saying the maybe the person should be convicted first before they confiscate anything.  PT replied back asking for the Senator's name..."Who is the State Senator, do you want to give his name?  We'll destroy his career?"  Followed by laughter, but not by PT as would be expected if that statement was a joke.  To the Sheriffs credit, no name was brought up.

WTF Moment #1:  As I watched the video of this(in link above)  and you can see PT does not react with laughter as everyone else in there does, you really get the feeling he is serious and would do it, call out a State Senator, in the national spotlight for doing his job.  And for a questionable thing.  Hence, WTF Moment # 2.

WTF moment # 2:  I did not know that a conviction was not necessary before law enforcement can confiscate your belongings under Asset Forfeiture law.  Is this just Texas? All over?  I will do research to figure that out.  But for now, if you are arrested in Texas in a Asset Forfeiture situation, items involved will be confiscated before conviction.  The next question is if your found innocent, how easy is it go get everything back.  It was also mentioned by this sheriff that if the senator is successful, the cartels in Mexico would win.  Still not sure what difference waiting for a conviction does.

I'm done.

Hello and welcome to the Maz WTF is Going On blog.  With all of the news coming our way each day, I hear myself saying WTF? more and more multiple times a day.  So much in fact that without being able to discuss this with anyone, it looks like it might be a tad bit physically toxic to myself.  So in the interest of living...I started this blog to get these WTF moments out of my head.
